Purpose
The GDS purpose includes:

  • Providing a variety of new services for every type of connectivity by regularly upgrading infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of customers
  • Continuing to install and operate connections across Lebanon to maintain genuine national coverage
  • Guaranteeing immediate intercession and repair in the event of link failure within two hours in Beirut and less than four hours in the suburbs and beyond
  • Providing customers with private mobile hotline numbers for emergencies after normal working hours
  • Ensuring 24/7 support through a Network Management Center and providing immediate troubleshooting solutions by remotely detecting and resolving failures to reduce the problem-solution time gap
  • Offering a bouquet of value-added services: Internet access, applications, financial services, and much more

Achievements
Since its inception, GDS has attained market credibility and endorsed its market leader position through numerous landmark innovations. Among its biggest breakthroughs: conquering 90% of Lebanon’s complex terrain and effectively reaching customers everywhere.

By staying abreast of the latest technologies and monitoring the fast-paced evolution of today’s market, GDS continues to meet customers’ needs with maximum reactivity.

Other milestone achievements include:

  • August 2001: Using LMDS technology, GDS is the first to launch a Broadband Fixed Wireless Access service in the Middle East.


  • September 2001: GDS commissions the first-ever local Internet exchange in Lebanon. As a result, most private ISPs in Lebanon are interconnected through GDS.


  • September 2002: GDS launches a successful and competitively priced new wireless access IP technology, allowing corporate customers to access any chosen ISP.


  • June 2003: GDS launches a limited trial version of a wireless broadband for home Internet access. The service becomes fully operational in 2004.


  • September 2003: GDS collaborates with major institutions in the health sector to provide national health network coverage for insurance companies, hospitals, laboratories, and pharmacies.


  • January 2007: GDS becomes the first service provider to introduce WiMAX technology in Lebanon.


  • August 2007: GDS launches its DSL access network in the context of a local loop unbundling with the Ministry of Telecommunications.


  • March 2009: GDS completes Phase 1 of WiMAX implementation.


  • March 2009: GDS embarks on the e-North Initiative, comprising of public-private partnerships based on buy-in and support to sustain coverage of broadband Internet across northern Lebanon. The project also includes the first-ever WiMAX Rev-e Network service in Lebanon.
